Georgetown, Squire Park, South Park and West Seattle are Getting “In Motion” This Summer!

SDOT and its partners are working hard so everyone has more and better choices to get around on foot, bike, buses and trains.  Just as important as providing more choices is encouraging people to use those choices.

King County Metro Transit’s In Motion program is a great example of encouraging folks to use healthier travel options.   Each In Motion program focuses on one neighborhood at a time, and partners with local groups, businesses and people in the community to tailor the program to the ‘hood.

When you sign up, you receive a welcome packet with information on walking, biking, carpooling and transit, and Metro even sweetens the deal by throwing in some free bus tickets.  When you report your trips you earn incentives and chances to win prizes from neighborhood merchants.   In Motion is kind of famous for its handy maps showing the bus routes, walking distances, bike routes and landmarks just for your neighborhood.   Click here to get the Georgetown map.  (See the bottom of the right column.)

An exciting part of this program is that it permeates the neighborhood through a direct mailer to thousands of homes, stories in the local paper or blog, posters throughout the business district, signs in stores and more.  In Motion just becomes the “In” thing to do.

In Motion has already come to many neighborhoods including Ballard, Uptown, Madison-Miller, Northeast, Beacon Hill, Mt. Baker, Othello, Rainier Beach and Columbia City, just to name a few.

The 2011 programs in Seattle launch between June 11 and July 8 and run for about three months, so be on the lookout if you live or work in Georgetown, Squire Park, South Park of West Seattle.
