In past years, our team would table at community events around the city to speak with people about their transportation needs, City programs and projects happening or coming up in their neighborhoods, and to connect directly with community members. The pandemic caused many events to be cancelled or postponed in 2020 and 2021, we were therefore unable to attend, but we are excited for events to resume again!
This summer, we’re back with our staff attending several community events and festivals throughout Seattle, we’d love to see you out there!
We will be asking community members for feedback to help shape the Seattle Transportation Plan (STP), which is our commitment to building a transportation system that provides everyone with access to safe, efficient, and affordable transit options. We’re currently in our first phase of engaging with people to understand community priorities.
Join us at these events (listed below) so we can hear directly from you about what you hope to see in the future of Seattle’s transportation, and the challenges you may face while moving around the city today. If you can’t attend one of these events, please consider taking our STP survey online in our engagement hub to learn more about how to get involved, and tell us where you see opportunities for future improvement.
Our staff is also looking forward to chatting more about local projects in a variety of neighborhoods, from new bus lanes to street, sidewalk, and bike lane improvements, to public safety awareness campaigns. We will be out at many events around West Seattle and Duwamish Valley to chat with community members about West Seattle Bridge progress and updates. We’ll also share resources on how you can get in touch with us to report things in your community – such as the Find it/Fix It app, and our (206) 684-ROAD phone line and other customer service resources.
Below is a list of major community events we’re attending. We recommend considering taking public transit, or biking, walking, or rolling if that is an option for your trip, as these will be highly– attended events with limited parking.
Seafair Indian Days Powwow | July 15-17 at Daybreak Star Cultural Center
The United Indians Seafair Indian Days Powwow, held in conjunction with Seattle Seafair, is a 3-day event that includes vendors, dancers, musicians, and more. This tradition brings Native Americans of all tribes and cultures to celebrate. Learn more about the event on the United Indians website.
Chinatown-International District (CID) celebration and Resource Fair | July 30 at Hing Hay Park
The Greater China Hong Kong Business Association of Washington Foundation is holding a resource fair in Hing Hay park to help community members and business owners recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. There will be music and entertainment, an art mural for all ages, informational booths, food vouchers for local restaurants and more! Learn more on the CID Celebration website.
Umoja Festival | August 5-7 at Judkins Park
Umoja Fest has been a tradition since the 1940’s, a 3-day festival and parade honoring Seattle’s Black communities’ heritage, culture and contributions. This event will have various musical performances, dance, food, and more! Learn more at the Umoja Fest website.
Duwamish River Festival |August 6, at Duwamish River People’s Park & Shoreline Habitat
Held by the Duwamish River Community Coalition, the Duwamish River Festival brings communities together to celebrate diversity and the cleanup and restoration of the Duwamish River. There will be music, food, games, and more! Learn more about the event on the Community Coalition website.
Othello International Festival | August 14, Othello Playground
Held by the Othello Park Alliance, the International Festival is an annual event celebrating the positive accomplishments of the park and the diversity within the community. There will be music, art, food, and more. Visit Othello Park Alliance website to learn more about the park and event.
Big Day of Play | August 20, Rainer Community Center and Playfields
Presented by Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Get Moving Initiative, the Big Day of Play celebrates Seattle’s diversity and encourages people of all ages to get active and have fun while doing so. There will be performances, activities, and more – find out more about this event on the Big Day of Play website.
Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias | September 17-18, Seattle Center
This 2-day event held at the Seattle Center, celebrates Latino communities in Seattle and commemorates the independence of Latin American countries. Founded by a group of Latino community leaders in 1978, this festival has entertainment, food and cooking demonstration, activities and more. Learn about this event on the Seattle Center website.
