SR 520 Westbound Lane Closure Coming 11 p.m. Friday, Mar.13 to 5 a.m. Monday, Mar.16

Work continues on the SR 520 bridge replacement. The Washington State Department of Transportation just completed construction of the last pontoon for the new floating bridge and the West Approach Bridge North project is well underway. All westbound lanes of SR 520 will be closed between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard from 11 p.m. Friday, March 13 to 5 a.m. Monday, March 16.

The closure will allow West Approach Bridge North Project (WABN) crews to conduct work in three key locations:

  • Mainline SR 520 between the Montlake shoreline and off-ramp to Lake Washington Boulevard: Crews will sawcut and remove sections of concrete barrier, then replace them with temporary barrier. This is one of the first steps in widening a portion of SR 520 to make room for a newly configured off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard.
  • Mainline SR 520, east of 24th Avenue East: Crews will begin installing a new combined sewer line under the highway, which requires sawcutting existing pavement, digging a trench across the westbound lanes, backfilling and repaving with fresh asphalt.
  • Westbound SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard: Crews will place temporary concrete barrier along the off-ramp, shifting traffic slightly to the north and establishing a protected work zone. In the coming months, crews will use this work zone to build a newly configured off-ramp to Montlake Boulevard and an improved pedestrian walkway to the westbound freeway transit stop.

Drilling crews will continue geotechnical investigations during the weekend closure to analyze soils in areas planned for future highway improvements. This work requires:

  • Closing a single lane of westbound SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard and I-5 from 6 a.m. to midnight Saturday, March 14.
  • Closing a portion of the southbound left-turn lane from Montlake Boulevard to East Lake Washington Boulevard between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. Drivers will still be able to use the southbound left-turn lane to access East Lake Washington Boulevard during this work.

If the geotechnical work is not completed on Saturday, crews will close the same lanes starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday and reopen them when the work is finished.
