Travel Alert: Paving began on N 50th Street & N 40th Street in Green Lake & Wallingford

6/4/2020 Update: We are planning to pave N 40th St on June 8 and 9.

Green Lake & Wallingford neighbors, are you curious about what’s happening on N 50th Street and N 40th Street?

Last summer, as a part of the Green Lake and Wallingford Paving & Multimodal Improvements project, construction began to make major improvements for people walking, bicycling, rolling, taking transit, and driving in the area.

With funding from the Levy to Move Seattle, we’re investing in more than six miles of repaved streets, nearly 500 new or upgraded curb ramps, 2 new traffic signals, 2 new flashing lights at crosswalks, new two-way bike lane around Green Lake, sidewalk repair and replacement, and other enhanced facilities for people walking and biking.

The Levy to Move Seattle  makes up about 30% of Seattle’s transportation budget and funds projects and maintenance that make walking and biking routes safer, improve our sidewalks and busiest arterials, and create better access to transit.

We’re completing an important part of our project!

We completed paving on N 50th St the week of May 26.

Asphalt paving is scheduled to take place on June 8 and 9 on N 40th St between Stone Way N and Latona Ave NE. If there are delays for weather, paving may take place on June 10. One rotating lane of traffic on N 40th St will be maintained with flaggers and Uniformed Police Officers.

Emergency access will be maintained at all times during this work.

This work is weather dependent and may be delayed due to rain. If you live on N 40th or N 50th streets, check our website to learn what you can expect from paving work near your home.

Work on N 50th St and N 40th St is expected to wrap up in early summer.

Once paving on these streets is complete, crews will paint final stripes and make final repairs to curb ramps and sidewalks. Road work will continue into 2021 on the Green Lake Loop and N 80th St.

Thank you for your patience as we safely and efficiently work towards this important milestone of completing the paving on 50th and 40th.

At the City of Seattle, we are continuing to follow guidance from federal, state, and local leaders and our public health partners regarding COVID-19.

State officials have determined that work on public works projects can continue during the Governor’s stay-at-home order provided that appropriate safety measures are in place.

The SDOT is continuing with essential transportation (public works) projects to the greatest extent practicable during these times. The health and safety of our workers and the public is our first priority.

Our contractors have updated their Health and Safety Plans to incorporate best management practices with respect to COVID-19 throughout our construction work sites. If a situation arises where a contractor is unable to maintain these practices on a work site, or the Governor orders that work on public works projects must stop, the contractor shall temporarily suspend work until the work can be performed safely and legally.
