The bascule is the center portion of the bridge that opens and closes for maring traffic. There are long approaches on each end of the bascule bridge. The bridge crosses Salmon Bay leading to the Lake Washington Ship Canal. February 9, 2012

Come play in the street this Saturday

Toddler Hula HoopIt’s a great summer for playing in the street. Come on out and have a picnic in the street, play scrabble, teach your kid to ride their bike, have fun! The next Seattle Summer Streets party is in Rainier Valley on Rainier Avenue S between S Alaska and S Orcas streets.

Saturday, August 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rainier Avenue S is being closed to cars and opened to people for the 17th Annual Heritage Parade (11 a.m. to noon) and so that pedestrians and bicyclists can come out to play and support local businesses (noon to 3 p.m.). The street celebration includes music:

 12:00 – 12:30 Abráce
12:35 – 1:15 Correo Aereo
1:25 – 1:55 ONE up TWO down
2:00 – 2:15 Etiquette
2:20 – 3:00 Gabriel Toredos

 …and is divided into theme streets: Restaurant Row, Art Street, Sustainable Street, Wellness Street and Fitness Street. Activities will include: over 30 venues with light rail sales, booty exercise mini-classes, acupuncture, the City Farming Pod with urban chickens, Undriver’s License Booth, SEEDArts drawing contest and a giant chess game.

 Take Metro Bus Route 7 to the event, or ride Link Light Rail. Exit at the Columbia City Station and walk three blocks east on Edmund Street. We’ll see you there.
