TIMBER!

When you last drove on the NE 45th Viaduct, you likely felt like you were on a pretty solid bridge.  You were, but under that concrete was wood that doesn’t look nearly as sturdy once you take the concrete off!  Take a look at this demolition photo from the project.

The NE 45th Street viaduct will be closed from June 14 to September 10 while the west approach is replaced.  For more information on the project, please visit the project Web site.

The NE 45th Viaduct in the University District is one of the City’s last timber-supported structures and was originally built in 1939.  Nearly 70 years later it’s good to know the timber held up…
