Biking is about to get easier and safer in Ballard. This summer SDOT is adding bike lanes on 20th Ave NW between NW Market St and NW 65th—connecting the Ballard business district to the single family homes, apartments, condos, businesses and Salmon Bay School to the north. The new bike lanes will intersect at NW 57th St with the signed bike route that runs east-west a few blocks north of NW Market St.
This is another example of SDOT using paint to change a street into a “complete street” so that it works better for multiple types of transportation.
This section of 20th Ave NW is a great candidate for these changes because it has a relatively low number of cars using it each day. Arterials parallel 20th Ave NW just a few blocks away, so it’s not a route for buses or freight. Parking, traffic flow or access to residential side streets will not be affected by the changes.

Piece by piece, project by project, SDOT continues to create the bicycle network envisioned in Seattle’s Bicycle Master Plan…
