The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is responsible for managing more than 482 stairways that can be found across the city. These stairways provide key links and connections to neighborhoods, transit, schools, and businesses. Keeping these stairway connections clear and useable is a big job! Funding for this work is provided through the Bridging the Gap (BTG) Levy. Over the first five years of the program BTG has funded more than 20 stairway rehabilitation projects. In 2012, two major stairway projects have been completed and a third will be done soon.
Having good pedestrian connections across the city is vital and each of these stairways helps provide those connections. Seattle is a city of hills and stairways do what roads and sidewalks sometimes can’t do, link our neighborhoods to make it easier to get from one place to another.
