Summer-like weather helped Bike Month start off in a big way on Thursday May 1st. Both the Fremont Bridge and Spokane Street Bridge set new highs on their respective bike counters.
The Fremont counter tallied 5,937 bike trips besting the 5,121 set on June 4, 2013. This was an increase of 18 percent over May 1 of last year.
The Spokane counter registered 1,772 bike trips, its third high mark in three days.
Just as impressive was the percentage of all trips across these bridges that were made by bicycles. For the Fremont Bridge 17 percent of the trips on May 1 were by bicycle. Across the Spokane Street Bridge 12 percent of trips were by bicycle. These are based on the 2013 average weekday traffic volumes.
