Seawall Project Update

Big changes are wrapping up at Seattle’s waterfront. Planned in 2012, with construction starting in 2013, the Seawall Project replaces the current Seawall (finished 1934) with one that will meet seismic standards, protect critical infrastructure, enhance natural habitats, and serve as a foundation for future improvements.

Check out what we’ve done so far, and what needs to happen before the project finishes.

Major work completed

In February 2017, we completed work on the waterfront outside of the Seattle Aquarium, opening the crosswalk and signal at Pike Street three months ahead of schedule!

We finished replacing the seawall in front of historic Piers 55 to 57. You can now walk on the light penetrating surface (LPS) panels all the way from the Seattle Aquarium to Colman Dock.

This comes after major project work was completed near Colman Dock between Madison Street and Yesler Way, with new crosswalks, signals, and benches installed and waterfront parking and pedestrian access restored.

What’s next for the seawall?

We are continuing to replace the seawall next to Pier 62/63. In March 2017, we started jet grout installation. When that work is finished this summer, the seawall between Virginia and S Washington streets will be up to current seismic standards.
