Travel Advisory | Road layout on N 34th St changing in May

Thanks to your Levy to Move Seattle dollars at work, we’re making changes to the road layout on N 34th St from Fremont Ave N to Stone Way N to increase safety for people on bikes, walking, and rolling. The work will start as soon as Monday, May 10 and take place overnight.

Over the last few years, we’ve worked with the Fremont community to improve transportation in the neighborhood for people using all modes of travel. This resulted in a project design that includes protected bike lanes, improved crossings and sidewalks for people walking and rolling, and maintained access to the important businesses along this stretch that contribute to the vibrancy of the community.

The work, starting as soon as May 10, is expected to take two weeks and will require detours and temporary driveway closures.

During this time, we’ll remove existing road markings, place new ones, and install protected bike lanes. New traffic signals will also be added at Troll Ave N and Stone Way N. Parking will be impacted overnight.

The work will be split into three phases. During the first two phases, we’ll work on the north side of N 34th St. Once the north side is complete, we’ll complete work on the south side of N 34th St.

Phase 1:

During the work on the north side, people entering or leaving parking garages and driveways will only be able to do so by turning left. Flaggers at the intersection of Troll Ave N and N 34th St to will guide people riding bikes through the detour.

During phase 1, N 34th St will be open to people driving eastbound. Westbound traffic will be detoured onto N 35th St.

Phase 2:

Phase 2 will be similar to phase 1 except for people on bikes will now use the newly-installed bike lanes to move between Troll Ave N and Fremont Ave N.

Phase 3:

During this phase of construction, we’ll be working on the south side of the street. N 34th St will be open to westbound traffic. Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto N 35th St.

What to expect during construction:

Typical construction hours are weeknights from Monday to Thursday from 7 PM until 7 AM. Other expected construction effects may include:

  • Driveway access will be limited at times
  • Noise, dust, debris, and vibration
  • Construction staging and parking impacts near the work sites
  • Roadway closures and detours for vehicle traffic
  • Temporary no parking along north side of N 34th St
  • Crosswalk and sidewalk closures, and detours for people walking and biking

All work is weather dependent.

We will continue to update our project webpage with the latest information on this project, and you can reach out with questions at any time.

Thank you for your investment in this project through the Levy to Move Seattle, and your patience with the detour as we make these improvements. As we prepare for our new normal in the midst of the pandemic, you are helping us to build lasting, positive change toward a more livable, safer city for all.
