Travel Advisory: Upcoming work happening in West Seattle for the next few weeks

Work includes upgrading the West Seattle Bridge detour route and rehabilitating SW Alaska and SW Roxbury Streets

It’s a busy next few weeks in West Seattle! We are making upgrades to the West Seattle Bridge detour route and building a better bus street on Delridge Way SW.  Work includes:

  • SW Genesee St | Friday through early Monday on July 9 – 11 and July 16 – 18: SW Genesee St will close for street demolition and repaving.

  • SW Alaska St in the Junction | Weekends of July 10 and 17 – We will close the two westbound lanes on the block of SW Alaska St between California Ave SW and  44th Ave SW to repave near Wells Fargo Bank. There will be detours around this block for westbound traffic.

  • Delridge Way SW | Starting as early as Monday, July 12, for about two weeks – One-lane closure on Delridge Way SW from SW Holden St to SW Trenton St. Traffic will be detoured to 35th Ave SW.

  • SW Roxbury St | July 19 – 20 – Reduced travel lanes for SW Roxbury St due to paving between 24th Ave SW and 25th Ave SW.

This work is weather permitting, and SDOT will share updates if the schedule changes. If possible, please plan your weekend travels accordingly to detour around this work and avoid the work areas. Thanks for your patience as we work to improve safety on these streets for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, and driving.

SW Genesee St Upgrades | July 9-11 and July 16-18

As part of the Delridge RapidRide H Line project, SW Genesee St between 25th Ave SW and Delridge Way SW will close Friday through Monday morning the next two weekends of July 9 to 11 and July 16 to 18 while we demolish and repave the street. The street will reopen early Monday morning after both weekends.

What to expect

During this closure, local access to SW Genesee St will be maintained from SW Avalon Way and SW Alaska St. (Please use the routes highlighted in the map to navigate the area.) People driving will not be able to cut through to Delridge Way SW. Sidewalk access will be accessible throughout the work for people walking.

SW Alaska St Concrete Work | July 10-11 and July 17-18

For the next two weekends (July 10 – 11 and July 17 – 18), we are replacing concrete street panels on SW Alaska St as part of our work to monitor and maintain the West Seattle Bridge detour route. Construction will occur on SW Alaska St between California Ave SW and 44th Ave SW.

What to expect

Work will occur over the next two weekends of July 10-11 and July 17-18. Crews will work from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. However, the westbound roadway will be closed from about 8 a.m. on Saturday to 6 a.m. on Monday. After the concrete is poured both weekends, crews will need to keep the detour in place until early Monday morning when the concrete is fully hardened for vehicles to drive over.

People driving eastbound will not be impacted. Buses and people driving westbound will detour around the one-block work area. Please go slow when driving in the area. Watch for people biking and walking, follow signs, and expect delays as traffic will be shifted around the work area.

During the Farmer’s Market on Sunday, the detour will be to go south on California Ave SW, then west on SW Edmunds St and the north on SW 44th Ave to access SW Alaska St.

Sidewalk access will be maintained throughout the work for people walking. The westbound bus stops on this block for the C-Line, Route 50 and Route 128 will be closed temporarily.  Please contact King County Metro for details.

Southbound Traffic Detour between SW Holden St & SW Trenton St | Starting July 12 and lasting about two weeks

Beginning as early as this Monday, July 12 at 7 a.m., Delridge Way SW will be closed for southbound traffic between SW Holden St and SW Trenton St. The street will remain closed for about two weeks as we work to safely demolish and rebuild both the northbound and southbound travel lanes on Delridge Way SW.

What to expect

People driving wanting to continue south will need to detour to 35th Ave SW via SW Holden St. People driving north on Delridge Way SW will not need to detour during this work, though traffic may be shifted several times during construction. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The detour will remain in place during non-working hours.

To learn about bus reroutes during construction, please visit King County Metro service advisory webpage: https://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro/alerts-updates/service-advisories.aspx.

Repaving on SW Roxbury St | July 19-20

In partnership with King County, SDOT crews will repave SW Roxbury St between 24th Ave SW and 25th Ave SW. Expect traffic slowdowns on Monday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 20

What to expect

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 20. For people driving, traffic will be reduced to one lane with crew members directing drivers. Please go slow when driving in the area. Watch for people biking and walking, follow signs, and expect delays. For people walking, rolling, and biking in the area, sidewalk access will be maintained.

In addition, tree pruning will occur on Wednesday, July 14 through Thursday, July 16 in advance of the paving work. This shouldn’t impact traffic flow, but there will be crew activity in the area. This tree pruning effort is to make room for the large paving equipment to ensure that we don’t damage the trees or the equipment.
