E Madison St will be closed between 12th Ave and 14th Ave for two weeks starting Monday, March 6

Starting at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 6, we will close all lanes of E Madison St between 12th Ave and 14th Ave. The street will reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20. There will be a signed detour for people driving, and buses will be re-routed. Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained. 

This closure will allow our crews and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) crews to continue work on replacing a 120-year-old watermain at E Madison St as part of the RapidRide G Line project. The full closure of E Madison St is necessary given the significant scope and complexity of watermain replacement in this area. We are closing the street to safely complete this work. We encourage travelers to use alternate routes if they are travelling in or around the area.

Closure details (March 6 – 20):

  • Crews will be working on E Madison St between 12th Ave and 14th Ave.
  • This work requires a full closure of E Madison St between 12th Ave and 14th Ave in both directions.
  • Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Street closures will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 6 and will reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20. 

Detour information:

  • Eastbound traffic on E Madison St will be detoured to E Union St and 19th Ave.
  • Westbound traffic on E Madison St will be detoured to E Pike St and 12th Ave.
  • Southbound 14th Ave will be local access only between E Pine St and E Pike St and closed from E Pike St to E Union St.
  • Northbound 14th Ave will remain open. People traveling north on 14th Ave will be able to continue northbound across E Madison St or turn right on E Madison St.
  • People biking should take extra caution when biking on these detour routes.

Pedestrian access will be maintained, although there will be intermittent sidewalk and crosswalk closures throughout the work area. Locations of closures will change throughout construction. People walking and rolling should follow signed detours and be prepared for closures and detour routes to change as the work progresses. Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

King County Metro bus routes 2 and 12 will be rerouted around the closure. The Route 2 will use 13th St to E Pike St to 11th Ave (westbound) and 11th Ave to E Pike St to 12th Ave (eastbound). The Route 12 will use 12th Ave and E Pike St. Visit King County Metro’s Transit Alert page for the latest information on bus stop closures or relocations and to sign up for alerts.
