It’s Easy Being Green

SEATTLE — The city of Seattle has been recognized as having the greenest fleet in North America for 2010 by the 100 Best Fleets Program.

The program recognizes and rewards peak performing fleet operations in North America and is in its seventh year.

Seattle’s green fleet program was recognized for its integration of alternative fuels, its examination of where and how petroleum reduction policies and procedures could impact the fleet, and for having a dedicated coordinator for its program.

Plus, the city has also become a launch market for the next generation of electric vehicles including the Nissan Leaf; created a vegetable oil biodiesel pilot program; and reduced petroleum use by over 100,000 gallons in the last two years!

In 2009, Seattle was rated the seventh greenest fleet in North America position. Improvement is good! For more information, visit http://the100bestfleets.com.

SDOT is a big part of this success – we lead the city in reducing our fuel use.   In just this year we have saved over $60,000 on fuel use; and reduced our fuel use by 13% from 2008.  We have a friendly competition with the Parks Department to reduce fuel use…right now we are neck in neck, but slightly ahead.

Its easy being green when it saves green $$.
