Cameras are Streaming Live Video at 12 Locations
As part of the preparations for the past week’s closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, SDOT Mayor unveiled an upgrade to the city’s Traveler’s Information Map – cameras streaming live at 12 key road locations citywide. The streaming video, helps residents and businesses plan before they get into their vehicles so they can make the best decision on their route or means of getting to their destination.
We have received overwhelmingly positive comments from users of the system. One consistent complaint/request: When can we have live streaming on all the SDOT cameras and can the videos be longer than 30 seconds?
Good questions; we, also, would love to add longer live streaming to all our cameras which total 135; however, this is a pilot program that will run through the end of March. During that time, we will monitor the operation and performance as well as the demand for the video streams through Traffic Incident Management (TIM). We are also gathering feedback from camera-users to help us define the design scope. SDOT is currently testing the internet bandwidth capability by making 12 cameras available for live streaming.
Users should be happy to note that streaming video is possible on the iPhone and the iPad – for those devices just select menu on the Travelers Map and then click on Live Traffic Video.
The department selected the cameras with higher usage. The locations are:
- West Seattle Bridge Deck,
- West Seattle Bridge at Delridge,
- Lake City Way NE and NE 125th St,
- 15th Ave NW and NW Market St
- Boren Ave and Madison St
- Montlake Ave NE and 25th Ave NE
- Northgate Way N and 5th Ave N
- Aurora Ave N and N 87th St
- E Marginal Way S and S Hanford St
- Rainier Ave S and S Henderson St
- Aurora Ave N and Aloha St
- Rainier Ave S and S Dearborn St
