The Mercer team has put in extra hours over the past few months as construction on and in front of the I-5 on- and off-ramps at Mercer Street has been underway. In April, SDOT announced that the Mercer ramps would have approximately 20 full weekend closures over three years as part of the Mercer Corridor Project’s East Phase.
Ramp closures are required to install underground utilities and to align the on- and off-ramps with future westbound lanes of Mercer Street. During weekend closures, crews work directly in the intersection and on the ramps where more than 80,000 vehicles normally travel every day.
Crews installed new storm drains along the I-5 on- and off-ramps
Since April, the ramps have been closed over four weekends and crews have installed utilities in the intersection of Mercer Street and Fairview Avenue N, including storm drainage systems, water main pipes, and underground electrical lines. Surveying for ramp re-alignment and utility installations have also taken place on the ramps themselves.
In the month of July, two full weekend closures will occur:
- July 8 – July 11
- July 22 – July 25

Closure hours are expected to be Fridays at 11:00 p.m. to Mondays at 5:00 a.m. Crews will continue installing utilities, working around the clock to have the ramps and intersection patched with concrete and ready for Monday morning traffic.

When the Mercer Corridor Project is complete, mobility will be improved for over 100,000 persons each day who travel through the area.
