Begun In 1879, today’s federal holiday was originally titled Washington’s Birthday and was celebrated on George Washington’s birthday, February 22. However in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act placed the day on the third Monday in February falling between February 15 and February 21. Because the holiday falls in the week between Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 and Washington’s on the 22nd, the holiday was thought of as celebrating the birthdays of both presidents and gradually became known as Presidents’ Day.
