During the month of October, kids, parents, and teachers all across the world join together to celebrate walking to school with fun events and activities. Known as IWALK, the goals of this celebration are to:

  • Encourage kids and parents to be physically active while having fun
  • Promote pedestrian safety around schools
  • Reduce vehicle traffic and pollution
  • Increase awareness about environmental issues
  • Spend time with friends and family

SDOT is participating in iWalk events at Roxhill and Olympic Hills Elementary Schools. Roxhill has three ongoing walking school buses and will celebrate walking to school with “Fuel Free Fridays” every week in October. At Olympic Hills it’s “Two Feet Tuesdays” every week in October.  These morning walk to school events help encourage kids to walk to school with fun incentives and prizes that encourage active play.

Be sure to walk to school with your kids this month or participate in your neighborhood school’s Walk to School Month events.
