Accidents Rare, Mistakes Common

The word “accident” isn’t really part of our vocabularly here at SDOT. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of collisions – at least 90 percent – are preventable. The word ‘crash’ is a much more accurate way to describe these incidents. Most crashes are caused by mistakes like speeding, distraction, or impairment and the folks at New Zealand Transport have put together an excellent, thought-provoking video to convey the consequences of these mistakes.

Here’s how they preface this piece: “No one should pay for a mistake with their life. When we drive, we share the road with others, so the speed we choose to travel at needs to leave room for any potential error.” Well said New Zealand Transport.
