The Ballard Multimodal Corridor includes several transportation investments in the Ballard community. This suite of investments was developed in consultation with the community and evolved from initial conversations about the Burke-Gilman Trail Missing Link Project. Improvements identified by trail users,  the industrial community, and nearby neighbors provided opportunities to design a complete, multimodal corridor along the Ship Canal between the Ballard Locks and 11th Ave NW.

This package of improvements goes beyond constructing the Missing Link multi-use trail and includes sidewalk improvements, signal and crossing improvements, roadway changes including new or expanded left turn lanes for vehicles, new paving, and transit improvements.

On Monday, May 6 we started construction on the Market Phase of the Ballard Multimodal Corridor project. On Tuesday, May 7, we will change the flow of traffic on the west end of the project corridor.

Here’s what you can expect:

On Tuesday, May 7 we will be setting up traffic control on NW Market St and NW 54th St between 32nd Ave NW and 30th Ave NW, and on 32nd Ave NW between NW Market St and NW 54th St. This change will be in effect through the end of the year.

NW Market St, between 32nd Ave NW and 30th Ave NW will be one-way westbound. Vehicles will not be permitted to turn eastbound (left) from 30th Ave NW or 32nd Ave NW onto NW Market St. 32nd Ave NW will remain two-way, north and southbound. NW 54th St will be reduced to one lane eastbound between 32nd Ave NW and 30th Ave NW.

Crosswalks will remain open through the majority of work this year. We ask people biking to merge with general traffic when riding through the work area.

In addition to changes to the street, crews will also be repainting the parking lot at the Ballard Locks. The east driveway will become an exit and the west driveway will be an entrance.

Our goal is to improve the safety, accessibility, and comfort for all users. We are working to pave and implement driveway enhancements, new signals, new utility and drainage infrastructure, and enhance pedestrian infrastructure between the Ballard Locks and 11th Ave NW.

The new multi-use trail will be open on NW Market St in mid-2020.
