LEVY DOLLARS AT WORK | It’s now safer to use 4 major Lake City Way NE intersections

Summary

  • Changes at four major intersections along Lake City Way NE (at NE 82nd St, NE 95th St, NE 135th St, and NE 137th St) improve safety for people walking, rolling, and biking.
  • Safety is our top priority. One part of our Vision Zero effort is making changes to arterial streets like Lake City Way. This marks the 24th major Seattle street we’ve made safer with Levy to Move Seattle dollars.
  • You’ll now see new crosswalks and crossing signals, new sidewalks, and improved ADA-accessible curb ramps to provide better sidewalk connections for people of all ages and abilities.
  • In 2020 we completed a safety project nearby on NE 125th St, as part of the Levy-funded Neighborhood Street Fund program. These projects in Lake City are just some of hundreds of others we’ve completed with Levy dollars to improve safety.

We made changes at four major intersections along Lake City Way NE (at NE 82nd St, NE 95th St, NE 135th St, and NE 137th St) to improve safety for people walking, rolling, and biking.

Map shows Lake City Way, including location of WSDOT repaving from I-5 to Seattle city limits at NE 145th St on 522 (Lake City Way). New sidewalks and the intersections SDOT improved are shown on the map (described in the blog post).

Especially in busy, high-traffic areas, we wanted to make it safer and easier for people to cross Lake City Way NE. Near these intersections, there are schools such as Sacajawea Elementary School at NE 95th St, restaurants, retail, apartment buildings, and other important services.

We did this work in collaboration with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). They repaved a long stretch of Lake City Way NE!

One part of our Vision Zero effort is transforming arterial streets like Lake City Way, and this marks the 24th major Seattle street we’ve made safer with Levy to Move Seattle dollars. You’ll now see new crosswalks and crossing signals, new sidewalks, and improved curb ramps to provide better sidewalk connections for people of all ages and abilities.

Below, we have included photos of the major changes made to each intersection. Read more details on the project webpage or in this previous blog post about the project.

NE 82nd St (Diagram of improvements)

We added a new crosswalk, bike crossing, crossing signal, expanded island for people to use while waiting to cross, curb bulb, and ADA-accessible curb ramp.

NE 95th St (Diagram of improvements)

We added new sidewalks from NE 91st to NE 95th St and NE 88th to NE 89th St, and a new sidewalk on either side of NE 95th St between Lake City Way NE and Ravenna Ave NE. We also added 10 new curb ramps, a new crosswalk, and new median.

We added 12 new curb ramps, a new bus zone, four new curb bulbs, and a new crosswalk.

This project is one of hundreds of others we’ve completed with Levy dollars to improve safety for people across travel modes.

This includes improvements for people biking (like protected bike lanes and neighborhood greenways), taking transit (like spot improvements to make people more visible), and walking and rolling (like curb ramps, sidewalk repairs, new sidewalks and crossings, and more).
