This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of Seattle’s transportation system and to ensure transparency and accountability as SDOT builds and delivers on levy commitments.
More about the Seattle Transportation Levy: The 2024 Seattle Transportation Levy (the levy) will collect $1.55 billion over 8 years to fund transportation projects and programs. With this revenue, SDOT will maintain and modernize the city’s aging infrastructure by building sidewalks, paving streets, repairing bridges, and improving connections to transit for a safe, reliable, and connected Seattle.
Committee Member’s Role
As a committee member, you’ll help keep Seattle moving by overseeing how levy funds are spent. Your role is to monitor budgets, track progress on projects, and make sure the funds are used as promised to Seattle voters. You’ll work with the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and SDOT staff to ensure transparency and accountability. Join us in being a steward of this public investment and help make a real difference in Seattle’s transportation future.
There was also an LOC overseeing the 2015 Transportation Levy (Levy to Move Seattle). We welcome you to learn more and review materials from past LOC meetings on our webpage.
Committee Structure
We are recruiting for the appointed positions on the 19-member LOC, including the 5 Mayor-appointed positions, which can be residents of any Council District, while also working with City Councilmembers to identify potential district appointees. The committee is composed of:
- Five Seattle residents appointed by the Mayor
- Seven Seattle residents appointed by the City Council across Council Districts
- The current Chair of the City Council’s Transportation Committee
- The City Budget Director (or designee)
- Representatives from Seattle’s Pedestrian, Bicycle, Transit, and Freight Advisory Boards
- A young member selected through the YMCA’s Get Engaged program
It is a goal in the 2024 Seattle Transportation Levy legislation to ensure that at least four LOC members represent census tracts identified as Highest and Second Highest Equity Priority under the City of Seattle Racial and Social Equity Index. This includes the below Seattle neighborhoods. If you live in or around these areas, please apply!
- Rainier
- University District
- Rainier Beach
- International District / Chinatown
- Van Asselt
- Lake City
- Garfield
- Jefferson
- South Park
- Delridge
- High Point
- Bitter Lake
- Southwest
- Hiawatha
- Miller
- Northgate
Additionally, per Transportation Levy legislation, we are striving to have at least two members with auditing experience to support financial oversight.
Time Commitment
Members serve a 4-year term and are expected to dedicate about 2 hours per month for evening committee meetings, as well as an additional 2-4 hours per month for tasks outside of meetings, such as reviewing meeting materials and minutes. Meetings may take various formats:
- Hybrid meetings, with an in-person option in Downtown Seattle at Seattle City Hall and a virtual option via Microsoft Teams (tentatively planned for the first Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm)
- Occasional in-person only meetings at levy-funded project sites accessible by public transit
Unless a meeting is held at a project site, the meetings will have a virtual option for members when unable to attend in person. The first committee meeting is expected to be in June 2025.
Additionally, all members will participate in a 2-day onboarding in spring 2025 to prepare for their roles. Members for whom participation in the committee would cause financial hardship are eligible for hourly compensation.
Application Process
Click here to be directed to an application. You will answer a few questions about yourself and your interest in serving on the LOC, and be asked to submit a resume and cover letter. The process will take 30 to 60 minutes. Interviews are expected to be held in March.
