Reconnect West Seattle was borne out of the unexpected closure of the West Seattle Bridge in March 2020, which affected West Seattle and the nearby Duwamish Valley communities in a variety of ways.
Through Reconnect West Seattle, we are implementing a vision to restore travel across the Duwamish to similar levels seen before the bridge closure and, at the same time, reduce the impact of increased detour traffic in the Duwamish Valley neighborhoods like South Park, Georgetown, and Highland Park.
Each quarter (January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December), we share a report focusing on the work we’ve done recently to help advance Reconnect West Seattle, and preview what you can expect next.

(Please note: Within the Appendix, the neighborhood-wide Home Zone projects are not shown as “complete” until all individual improvements within the Home Zones are complete. That means some projects are listed as in “design,” even though many of the improvements have already been made).
Highlights from Quarter 4, 2021:
- As of the end of the year, we’ve completed 53 of the 70 total planned Reconnect West Seattle projects.
- We’re currently in the construction phase of two new projects, and the planning and design phase for eight more new projects that will be completed in 2022.
Key accomplishments from Quarter 4, 2021:
- Installed the Duwamish Longhouse interim signal and crossing improvements.
- Completed crossing improvements at 7th Ave S and S Director St.
- Completed remaining speed cushions on 9th Ave SW, between SW Holden St and SW Henderson St.
- Added paint and post curb bulbs at S Albro St, S Eddy St, and S Ellis St.
- Added a left-turn pocket and right turn on red restrictions at S Michigan St, S Corson St, and S Bailey St.
- Began construction on 6th Ave S walking improvements (note: this work will continue in phases through the spring of 2022).
In our Home Zone neighborhoods (Georgetown, South Park, and Highland Park), we installed multiple painted curb bulbs to help calm traffic and shorten crossing distances. In partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, we also began working on improving drainage and underground pipe systems in South Park to reduce the impact of periodic flooding in the industrial area of the neighborhood.
In early-December, we installed an interim crossing signal at the Duwamish Longhouse for people walking and rolling. Over the next few months, we will continue working with BNSF on permitting for the permanent Duwamish Longhouse crossing signal along W Marginal Way SW. We will also build a new asphalt sidewalk along Sylvan Way SW, between High Point Dr SW and SW Sylvan Heights Dr.
