New pavement, sidewalks, trees, and other upgrades to South Park streets to help reduce flooding | LEVY DOLLARS AT WORK

One of numerous areas improved as part of this project: 5th Ave S & S Holden St. This image shows the area during a flood.

Summary

  • We have repaved, added new sidewalks, installed drainage infrastructure and planted new trees in South Park as part of a partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) to reduce flooding!
  • Chronic flooding in the South Park neighborhood has been a major challenge for decades, due to a lack of drainage infrastructure, low-lying flat areas, river-overtopping and climate change. Some streets were unpaved gravel and lacked sidewalks and street trees.
  • This project was one of our commitments in the Levy to Move Seattle, which will – among much more – address drainage issues in flood-prone South Park neighborhood. You can read more about the project background in this blog post as well.
  • We welcome you to visit South Park to walk or roll on the new sidewalks and enjoy all this community has to offer.

Addressing drainage issues in South Park neighborhood was one of our commitments in the Levy to Move Seattle. Chronic flooding in South Park has been a major challenge for decades, and some streets were unpaved gravel and lacked sidewalks and street trees. Combined with a lack of drainage infrastructure, low-lying flat areas, river overflow, and climate change, these conditions made the neighborhood very flood prone.

Streets in poor condition adversely affect water quality and impact freight mobility. Rebuilding the roadways was an important part of this project to further help streets drain effectively into a new stormwater conveyance system.

This project also received funds from the King County Flood Control District.

Thank you making this work possible through the Levy to Move Seattle. We welcome you to visit South Park to walk or roll on the new sidewalks and enjoy all this community has to offer!
